The sun was no longer a well defined sphere but a wide expanding ellipse that fanned out across the horizon like a colossal fireball, its reflection turning the dead leaden surface of the water into brilliant copper. As the sun rose Charlie felt the terrible stench of the waterline, the sweet compacted smells of dead vegetation and rotting animal carcasses washing over him.
